Movement Disorders |
|
Movement Disorders is a subspecialty in Neurology that relates to abnormal movements, tremors, jerks, spasms, funny walks and loss of movement. In many cases these abnormalities are benign, but in others they indicate an underlying disease or a degenerative neurological problem. Some diseases grouped under movement disorders include: · Parkinsons disease · Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) · Tourettes syndrome · Familial or essential tremor · Multiple system atrophy · Restless legs syndrome · Wilsons disease · Dystonia In some cases these conditions are associated with dementia or thinking difficulties, whereas in others the thinking problems come before the movement disorders, such as in dementia with Lewy bodies, corticobasal degeneration or frontotemporal dementias. We are involved in a number of research studies in movement disorders, and in particular Parkinsons disease, atypical Parkinsonism and PSP.
